Mount Arlington police add ride-alongs to hiring process; firefighters recognized for ice rescue

At the March 4, 2025 meeting of the Borough Council of Mount Arlington, Sgt. Ryan Sherburne delivered the police department's monthly report and announced a change to the hiring process: the department will implement ride-alongs as part of interviews for final candidates to allow extended observation beyond a standard interview.
Sgt. Sherburne described recent community outreach events, including Coffee with a Cop and a scam-awareness presentation at the Elk's Lodge for seniors. He also reported handgun and rifle familiarity trainings for the department.
Fire Chief Marcano reported the department completed multiple ice-rescue trainings (the minutes list 17 members ice rescue technician certified and two ice rescue operations certified) and described an incident during training when responders removed an individual from ice water unharmed. Chief Marcano and Mayor Stanzilis invited Firefighters Sean Whittaker, Chris Merring, Adrian Vargas and Arthur Scofield to the front of the room and presented them with Mount Arlington challenge coins in recognition of their actions.
The minutes record no formal council action on these reports; they were presented for the record and public recognition.
