Mayor Mike Procuk accepted the resignation of Councilman Shane Tommer, effective Jan. 13, 2026, and told the Village of Brooklyn Heights Council that members have 30 days to fill the vacancy.
Tommer’s written resignation, read into the record by the mayor, said in part: "please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position on the Brooklyn Heights Village Council effective January 13, 2026." In his response read aloud, Mayor Mike Procuk said, "I accept your letter of resignation," and summarized the personnel process that led Tommer to seek employment with the village’s Service Department.
In the mayor’s account, the Service Department position was posted on the village website in early November 2025. Tommer’s application was ranked third after an interview panel that included Mayor Procuk, President Pro Tem Mark Lasky, Service Director Joe Blados and HR representative Kevin Shebesta. Detective Mike Tulcewicz provided a background-check letter dated Dec. 23, 2025 stating no information that would disqualify Tommer. The mayor said Tommer signed a conditional offer in early January 2026 and completed a Department of Transportation physical and a drug test; the mayor confirmed the results were received Jan. 13, 2026 and said Tommer is eligible to begin employment as early as Jan. 14.
Procuk told council the body may establish its own process and qualifications for filling the seat, may call a special meeting if necessary, and that if council does not fill the vacancy within 30 days responsibility to fill it will revert to the mayor. Council discussed how the seat will be advertised and what application materials will be required, including a resume, and set a deadline for submissions.
There was no council vote recorded on accepting the resignation during the special meeting; the only formal motion recorded in the minutes was to adjourn, moved by Council Member Presot, seconded by Council Member Berzins, and approved unanimously. The mayor noted a regular council meeting is scheduled one week from the special meeting date.
