Budget committee approves $5,000 cemetery groundskeeper position; member abstains

On Feb. 18, 2026, the Vinalhaven Budget Committee voted to move $5,000 from the town’s cemetery fund to create a paid groundskeeper position and approved the proposed budget that includes that transfer.
Margret Qualey, Budget Committee member, moved to transfer the $5,000 from the cemetery fund to establish the groundskeeper position; Andrea Hogan, Budget Committee member, seconded the motion. Eric Davis, Budget Committee member, abstained from both the narrowly focused transfer vote and the subsequent approval of the proposed budget, citing his role on the Cemetery Committee.
Committee members discussed where the new position would sit in town operations. The group agreed the job should be placed under Public Works for payroll and administration while the Cemetery Committee would provide oversight of the position’s duties and priorities.
The committee recorded the transfer and the budget approval in its meeting minutes; both actions were advanced as part of the package of items the committee reviewed for the upcoming town warrant. The committee will revisit the full budget after School and County numbers are available.
