County approves school grant revisions and adds funding for summer feeding prepack needs

County finance staff presented a school budget amendment and a separate cafeteria (food-service) amendment at the June 11 meeting to ensure two state grants are fully spent and to cover increased summer-feeding prepack costs.
The first amendment (141202629) revised two state grants and added funding to a retirement line to cover labor costs; staff explained unspent state grant funds can be reclaimed, so the county revised the budget to ensure full usage. Commissioners moved and approved the amendment.
The cafeteria amendment (referred to as 2026-2 in the packet) addressed a gap in the food line after staff said the summer feeding program requires ordering and packing nonperishable food about two weeks ahead to supply weekly Thursday pick-up bags at Coffee County Middle School on Woodbury Highway. Staff reported packing roughly 700 meals in a recent week and explained that higher participation both helps eligible meal reimbursement and supports the school cafeteria’s numbers for state/federal reimbursement. The presenter said the prior amendment had omitted approximately $150,000 needed to cover an extended pre-order schedule; commissioners approved the additional funding to ensure the summer feeding operation can continue through the season.
Commissioners also asked logistical questions about pickup times and recordkeeping; staff said pickup generally begins in line at 2 p.m. with distribution starting about 3 p.m., and that a roster of participants is being collected for reimbursement claims. The amendments were moved, seconded and approved by vote.
The county asked the public to promote the summer feeding pickup for children under 18 at Coffee County Middle School on Thursdays (2–5 p.m., distribution starts about 3 p.m.).
