Selectmen highlight Walker’s Pond repairs, ask Sedgwick for $15,000 share

Selectman John H. Gray, chairman of the Brooksville board, said at the Nov. 9 Walker’s Pond meeting that floats have been pulled for the season and one float needs new decking, and that the fishway is flowing after a beaver dam was cleared.

The meeting, attended by Sedgwick selectmen and local volunteers, focused on practical upkeep and cost-sharing. Gray said the towns will ask Sedgwick and Brooksville each to raise and appropriate $15,000 to cover maintenance and landing costs; the motion to request the town share was made and seconded during the Nov. 9 session.

The two towns also agreed to reorder dusk-to-dawn landing signs after the wrong units arrived, and discussed whether BHHT’s contractors, already working in nearby blueberry fields, could price trail and bridge work while they are in the area. Friends of Walker’s provided financial support during the season: minutes show donations sent to the pond cleanup and upkeep accounts (a $3,500 check and a referenced $2,000 contribution across meetings).

Selectmen and pond stewards reviewed routine safety and access items: the pump at Mill Pond has been removed, additional parking and grading near the landing were flagged for future attention, and officials noted continuing efforts to find a plow driver for the pond road during winter months. Officials agreed to continue Walker’s Pond meetings next season and to coordinate with the state on beaver management and DOT actions where culverts or bridges are affected.

Next steps: Gayle M. Clifford, the town office administrator, was assigned to order the correct signs and to follow up on contractor pricing; the board plans to include the landing appropriation on next budgeting actions and to reopen the Walker’s Pond schedule in spring.
