Committee votes 4-3 to keep Lifeguard Captain role part-time

Committee member Brian Toomey and others discussed whether the role should be funded from taxation or the Beach Enterprise Fund. Finance Director Jodie Sanborn said the Beach Enterprise Fund lacks sufficient funds to cover a full-time salary without cutting services or finding other revenue. Fire Chief Mark Dupuis provided a staff-cost estimate, saying converting the position to full-time would increase costs by about $65,906; current Lifeguard Captains earn roughly $36,993 per year.
A motion to keep the position part-time, moved by Brian Toomey and seconded by David MacKenzie, passed 4-3. Committee members said the matter reflected competing priorities between safety staffing and enterprise fund limits. The committee did not adopt a plan to move the position to full-time.
