Committee funds Shoreline Trolley pilot and Historical Society repairs, approves other grants

At its March 4 meeting the Budget Review Committee approved multiple community grant requests, including a one-year pilot grant of $34,730 for the Shoreline Trolley (YCCAC-Transportation) and a $43,000 capital grant to the Historical Society for steeple, foundation and drainage repairs.
Bryce, representing the Historical Society, told the committee the funding split generally runs about one-third from Ogunquit and two-thirds from Wells based on population and membership. Committee member Bill Wade said he would prefer no additional funding until the society spent down some of its existing reserves. Despite that concern, the committee approved the Historical Society request (motion by Brian Toomey; second by David MacKenzie), recorded as approved 6-1.
Town Manager Mike Pardue outlined the Shoreline Trolley pilot program. Several committee members said they were open to trying the service for a first year but suggested lodging facilities should contribute to operating costs. The Shoreline Trolley grant carried 6-1 (motion by Brian Toomey; second by Richard Debold).
Committee subsequently voted unanimously to approve the remaining grant requests totaling $72,434 (motion by Brian Toomey).
