Board urged to assign a Readfield representative to volunteer driving program

At the June 9 meeting the Select Board discussed Neighbors Driving Neighbors, a volunteer transportation program that town staff and the Age Friendly Committee have supported for about a year.
Town Manager Eric described the program as a service that helps older residents remain in their homes by providing rides for errands and appointments; he said the program is free to riders (donations voluntary) and that a consistent board representative is needed to stabilize local participation and fundraising.
Eric said Rebecca Lambert has expressed interest in taking the select board position opening left by outgoing member Steve D'Angelus; the board plans to consider appointments at its next meeting. Staff also noted two or three new volunteer drivers have been recruited but additional leadership and modest funding are needed to keep Readfield enrolled in the program.
Board members agreed to place the appointment on the next meeting agenda and to consider additional outreach and events to raise awareness and support for the program.
