Silver Lake approves application for federal sidewalk grant on Kent Road; council discusses ADA-width options

The Village of Silver Lake Council on Nov. 17 voted unanimously to authorize the mayor to apply for a federal Transportation Alternative Set-Aside (TASA) grant through AMATS to construct new sidewalks on Kent Road.
Public Improvements Chair Chris Scott introduced Resolution 85-2025 and said the Village would like to see where it lands in the competitive grant process. OHM Engineer Jason Popiel told Council the program is competitive and typically favors projects that serve schools or low-income senior housing; he said school-travel projects often perform well for TASA funding. Popiel also clarified ADA design considerations: while a five-foot sidewalk width is preferred, a four-foot sidewalk may be acceptable if periodic turnouts (about every 500 feet) are provided.
Council amended a grammatical wording in the ordinance language and then passed the resolution by roll call, 7–0. Councilmembers and staff said they would use the Village’s seven-year plan for Kent Road to align the application and potentially adjust project elements to improve funding chances.
The application had already been submitted the previous Friday; Council emphasized the process is competitive and that approving the resolution was a step to preserve the Village’s opportunity to receive grant funding for pedestrian improvements.
