Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital announces residency program, reports five-star CMS rating

Scott Macccarver, CEO of Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, updated the commission on service growth and staffing and announced a new internal medicine residency program.
Macccarver said the hospital is a Level III trauma center and reported growing demand: "This year we're going to see over 37,000 patients in our emergency department." He said the hospital was recently recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services with a five-star rating for patient experience and clinical quality and noted the hospital received an "A" Leapfrog safety grade previously.
He announced that on July 1 the hospital will begin a three-year internal medicine residency program that will enroll eight physicians in each class (24 total when fully implemented) intended to train doctors for community hospitals. "We're going to train them right here in Wilson County," he said, noting the program aims to encourage physicians to remain in the region after training.
Macccarver introduced several hospital staff members and described expansions, including a comprehensive cancer center that required additional capacity. He said the institution now employs more than 850 people in the county.
The commission thanked him and hospital staff for the report and congratulated the hospital on the five-star designation and the new residency program.
