Northfield seeks design–build firms for roughly $1 million administration building; police to occupy current Village Hall

Mayor Jenn Domzalski on Sept. 13 told the Village of Northfield council she had distributed an advertisement and a request for qualifications asking design–build firms to submit proposals to design and supervise construction of an approximately $1 million administration building. Dan Collins, the Village engineer, prepared the RFQ with the assistance of Law Director Brad Bryan, the mayor said.
The council was told the Police Department would occupy the current Village Hall until a dedicated police headquarters could be built. Councilmember Nick Magistrelli asked whether the new police facility would include a jail; Police Chief Brian Zajac and Law Director Brad Bryan replied it would not. According to those officials, because of staffing, legal requirements and costs the Village prefers to continue arrangements with Macedonia to house prisoners rather than build detention space in-house.
Collins and Bryan provided the RFQ materials and a short description of the proposed project; the advertisement will be published to solicit responses from interested firms. The meeting record does not specify a project schedule, procurement deadline, or a firm selection timeline.
Also discussed during the meeting were several infrastructure and procurement items that affect near-term Village operations: Collins reported Sagamore Road drainage improvements are scheduled as a 5–7 day construction job beginning Monday, Sept. 25, and that generator procurement and pavement-marking contracts are on the agenda for council action (the generator procurement was later authorized by resolution). Collins said one of the three backup generators is available immediately, while the other two may have 30–40 week lead times and the Houghton Road unit requires specialized capacity to run an air compressor.
The council’s approval of the RFQ starts the formal solicitation process; the transcript does not record when responses are due or when the council expects to select a design–build firm. Next steps the council signaled at the meeting were publication of the RFQ and review of bids when they are received.
