Fire station renovation amended after missing oil‑separator tank; police and recreation programs scheduled for holidays

Fire Chief Jason Buss told the Northfield Village Council on Nov. 8 that work on the Fire Station Renovation and Expansion is progressing but that the building’s plans called for a 500‑gallon oil separator tank that was never installed; adding the tank must be added to the project scope and budget. Chief Buss said architects and the construction company have been cooperative and that the department will move out of the office side and operate from temporary offices in the apparatus bay while construction continues.
The department discussed options for a living‑quarters trailer and reviewed furniture and furnishings that were not included in the original bid. Chief Buss and Finance Director Jennifer Potvin said the village can procure furnishings through a Sourcewell government contract without a separate bid; vendors have agreed to hold current prices if furniture is ordered now and warehoused until delivery next year. Potvin confirmed funds are available in the Fire Department capital budget for the furnishings.
Police Chief Brian Zajac reported the department will pick up a new vehicle next week and expects the vehicle to be upfitted this month. Chief Zajac said the department will again participate in the Shop with a Cop program on Dec. 9; Officer McKay is overseeing ticket sales ($5 each) and the event will serve up to 10 children if all tickets are sold.
On community programming, Mayor Jenn Domzalski said the Recreation Board’s Giving Tree program has donor commitments and a $3,500 donation goal; the village’s first tree‑lighting ceremony is set for Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. at Village Hall; and the Halloween Haunted House drew an estimated 350 people.
Council members did not take formal votes on the fire station adjustments during the meeting; the change in scope and furniture procurement were presented as operational updates and procurement options for staff to pursue under existing budget authority.
