Ellen Bertel, representing the Historical Society of Old Northfield, presented to the Village Council on Jan. 24 to outline plans for local America 250 commemorations in 2026 and to request a municipal donation to help the organization continue its work and seek grant funding.
Bertel said the society has operated in the black over the last year, enabling it to apply for some small grants, and noted federal grants are available to communities that wish to hold America 250 celebrations tied to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. She encouraged communities that were first to do things or where local inventions took place to highlight those achievements in January 2026.
The presentation concluded with a request for a Village donation to sustain the Historical Society’s momentum and support its ability to apply for grants. Council did not vote on a donation during the meeting; the request was entered into the record for future consideration.
