Silver Lake police report rise in scams, make arrest in PayPal fraud case

Police Chief Steve Justice told the Village of Silver Lake Council on Oct. 6 that the department has seen an increase in scams and fraud and recently arrested one person in a PayPal-related scam. Chief Justice said accounting evidence was obtained that could lead to a second indictment, and that he has been working with a Special Agent from the FBI toward ongoing investigation and community outreach.

Chief Justice said the police are also implementing traffic-speed signs at targeted locations (installation pending a utility pole at 2916 Lee Road) and are selling "Shop the Cop" raffle tickets ($5 each) to fund holiday shopping for children; last year the program sold about 170 tickets and the department spent nearly $40,000 on gifts for kids.
Next steps: The department plans a public class to educate residents about scams and will continue investigative work in coordination with federal partners. Speed-sign installations proceed as site logistics allow.
