Engineer Dan Collins told the Village of Northfield Council on Jan. 24 that he has finalized an engineer’s estimate of $1,649,774.98 for the Cambridge, Stratford and portion of Huntington Road Reconstruction Project and would like to begin advertising for bids.
The estimate exceeds the project’s tentative budget of $1.6 million. Collins asked council to establish a February bid due date so the project can move into the procurement phase. Law Director Brad Bryan said council should discuss the estimate in the work session on the budget scheduled to follow the meeting before authorizing advertisement and bidding.
The council did not take a formal vote on the project during the meeting; Bryan framed the next steps as a budget decision rather than immediate project approval. If council directs staff to proceed after the budget review, Collins said the advertising and bid process could then move forward.
The engineer’s estimate and the budget shortfall were the principal facts the council considered; no contract awards or grant commitments were reported during the session. The council’s next procedural step is to weigh the estimate as part of the overall 2024 budget during the work session that followed the regular meeting.
