Heidi Wueste, Sugarloaf’s Sustainability Coordinator, briefed the Carrabassett Valley Select Board on Sugarloaf’s “Forever Project,” saying the mountain’s goals include achieving “net zero by 2030,” increasing diversion of waste from landfill, stewarding the ecosystem, using its business voice for good and supporting team members and local communities.
Wueste described the mountain’s current composting work with restaurants and hopes to expand participation to individuals; she cited a volunteer, Mr. Whitmore, who collects food waste for a local farm. She also outlined State of Maine initiatives that rural towns can use, emphasized local concerns tied to snow loss and increased precipitation that affect the Carrabassett River and its tributaries, and shared a timeline that runs from Fall 2024 through summer 2035.
Wueste said regional coordination, including work by the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments (AVCOG), and grant opportunities will be important to meet the goals. Town Manager Garrett Corbin noted that on efficient building topics CV CEO Chris Parks and he will meet Energy Efficiency Investments, Inc. (EEI) on Oct. 1 to discuss possible no‑cost efficiency upgrades such as windows, insulation and heating improvements; EEI is reimbursed through grants. Select Board members suggested the town newsletter as a vehicle to inform residents about sustainability initiatives and opportunities to participate.
