The Carrabassett Valley Select Board unanimously approved a renewal for Jar Cannabis Co.’s retail marijuana license and conditionally approved a new liquor license for the Red Pony on Oct. 28, 2024.
At a public hearing, Town Manager Garrett Corbin told the board it was unclear whether the clerk-delegation policy adopted in June 2024 authorizes the Town Clerk to approve cannabis license renewals, and he said he would check whether the State has guidance. There were no public comments on the Jar Cannabis renewal. Jay Reynolds moved to approve the renewal; Karen Campbell seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Applicant William Adelson, seeking a liquor license for the Red Pony in the Sugarloaf Hotel commercial area, told the board several state inspections (health and liquor) remained pending and described his background in the beverage field and his ties to Sugarloaf. The board voted to approve the Red Pony’s liquor license pending state inspection approvals; Jay Reynolds moved and Lloyd Cuttler seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Board members then signed the license form.
Why it matters: Both approvals allow local hospitality businesses to continue or begin operations under state and local rules; the clerk-delegation question flagged for further research could change routine handling of similar renewals in the future.
