Rome committee to press Select Board on Hoyt Island encroachment; beach access and paddle-trail use also on agenda

The Rome Recreation Committee on May 8 said Chair Sandy Shute will raise a reported encroachment at Hoyt Island at the Board of Selectmen’s May 19 meeting and recommended the town send a letter documenting a recent survey.
The committee’s recommended letter, as recorded in the minutes, would inform Hoyt Island of the survey’s findings, state the town’s willingness to allow the existing dock to remain only if it is maintained to mitigate liability, request Hoyt Island’s agreement that no additional docks will be installed, and clarify that continued use of the dock is by permission of the Town of Rome and does not establish adverse possession.
Committee members also asked that the Select Board consider the 7 Lakes proposed paddle trail and its potential use of Rome Town Beach, discuss a canoe/kayak rack for resident use at the beach, and authorize purchase of dog-waste bags and a dispenser for the beach area. Sandy Shute is scheduled to attend the Select Board meeting on May 19 to present these items.
The minutes record the committee’s recommendation and planned Select Board appearance; they do not report a Select Board decision or any recorded formal action by the town as of May 8.
