Rome Recreation Committee outlines playground upgrades, seeks grant help for equipment

Larry will fabricate an adapter to fit the new backboards to existing brackets and install them. Sandy and Larry will determine the tunnel’s location; Larry will procure material to cover the tunnel to support a boulder scramble and stump steps, with boulders taken from the pile behind the pavilion. Sandy will seek donated logs to create a climbing element. The committee noted that Adam Clement is watching for grant opportunities to fund additional equipment.
Chelsea Sucy will check whether RSU 18 performs its own field maintenance or who the district contracts for field refurbishment; Sandy said she will contact Sports Fields Inc. of Monmouth (Tyler) for a quote and scope of work on possible infield refurbishment for the baseball field.
The treasurer reported the committee’s account balance as $6,040.20, listing components as $892.32 rolled over from 2024, $5,000 raised at the Annual Town Meeting, $315 in revenue and an additional expected $200 from sweatshirts; expenses include $367.12 for a sweatshirt order. The committee recorded an equipment bin addition of a balance bike and helmet.
Next steps: fabrication and installation of the backboards, siting and material procurement for the tunnel and boulder scramble, follow-up on grant prospects, and obtaining a quote for the baseball field infield work. The committee did not record a formal vote on funding at the May 8 meeting.
