The RSU 12 Board approved participation in a coordinated active-shooter drill at Chelsea Elementary scheduled for June 19'021.
Presenters said the exercise is a multi-agency event involving sheriff's departments, state and local police, fire agencies and regional partners. The drill is planned for after students leave the building; presenters noted it could affect one day of the Boys & Girls Club and that staff who volunteer can observe or be active participants to see response procedures.
Board members asked whether the exercise had been run in the district before and whether there were plans to repair property damage from barricading. Organizers said the drill is new to the district but that the coordinating agency committed to cleaning and repairing any damage after the drill. Several members said familiarizing law enforcement with building layouts and staff was a benefit.
The board approved the motion to proceed; vote details were recorded as an affirmative voice vote.
