The stated goal is to avoid losing instructional time and to prevent the district from using up its limited storm-day allotments and thereby extending the school year past Juneteenth.
"If there's a delay start during a storm then automatically it will be a full day... dismissal will be at 2:30," the superintendent said, describing the intent to add one hour to a delayed Wednesday so the day better resembles a regular school day. The superintendent said she must still meet and consult with the teachers’ union because calendar items require union input before implementation.
Board members raised practical concerns: family childcare plans and daycare schedules, the district’s tradition of a late-Wednesday professional time and planning sessions, and the potential for parental complaints if the district changes the routine. One board member argued that adding an hour to count a full day feels counterintuitive and risks creating pressure to make more half days into full days; another said the district should consult the union and return with a firm plan.
The superintendent said she would consult with union leadership and either implement the change only after meet-and-consult or bring a finalized proposal back to the board at the next meeting.
No formal motion to change the calendar was adopted at the meeting; the board directed the superintendent to meet and consult with the union and report back.
