RSU 11 policy committee discusses handbook accessibility, FAQ idea and PreK reopening criteria

Members also discussed that reopening PreK at Helen Thompson next year will depend on projected enrollment and available staff.

Staff said the biggest change in the elementary handbook was ensuring live, accurate links to district policies and noted that signature‑page logistics (how families acknowledge receipt) vary by grade. Committee members proposed a short list of frequently asked questions or a one‑page guide that directs parents to appropriate contacts (teacher, building principal) and describes basic next steps when concerns arise.

On PreK, staff reported the program follows the district calendar but operates on a four‑day week and that administrative leaders are monitoring enrollment and staffing to determine whether PreK can return to Helen Thompson next year. "We're monitoring numbers," a staff member said, describing discussions about staffing projections and fiscal responsibility.

Committee members asked staff to track frequently accessed policies online to help prioritize a concise FAQ. The committee paused remaining handbook reviews for lack of time and agreed to return remaining policy items at a future meeting.

The committee also noted minor clerical fixes—live hyperlinks and an Office for Civil Rights address correction—that staff will make before the packet goes to the board.
