RSU 03 board forms committee to hear Waldo withdrawal proposal, approves wrestling overnight trip and notifies DOE of superintendent continuation

The RSU 03 school board on its most recent meeting laid groundwork for a possible withdrawal request by the town of Waldo, approved several administrative items and took unanimous votes on personnel and policy matters.
Board Chair gave an update that a community vote in Liberty favored the town accepting the Walker School from RSU 03, initiating formal steps to deed the property to the town. The chair said a small committee of board members (Glenn and Craig and a few others) will meet with Waldo officials to hear their proposal if Waldo chooses to pursue withdrawal from the district.
The board discussed Title IX and community concerns about athletics and gender-identity policies. "We are funded by the state of Maine and our schools are regulated by Maine law," the chair said while explaining that board membersviews vary and that legal constraints and pending state or federal guidance shape any policy response.
In other business the board heard an update from the Waldo Career & Technical Center (WCTC) about facility needs, a parallel effort to pursue a 916 grant and the need to balance grant timing with longer-term design/permits. WCTC reported 92 of about 200 student surveys returned, with 85% rating school environment and safety 4 or 5 out of 5.
On policies, the board approved second readings of policy ICA (academic calendar) and DJ (bidding and purchasing) by unanimous vote and reviewed policy DN (school property disposition) with no substantive changes recommended.
Under new business the board approved, by unanimous vote, an overnight stay for the Mountain View wrestling team on Jan. 30 in Windham for the MPA state duel tournament at Fryeburg Academy; the athletic director estimated the trip cost around $1,300 and said team fundraising and outside donations will cover expenses.
Later in the meeting the board voted unanimously to enter executive session under Maine statute MRSA 405(6)(A) to discuss employment of an individual. The board then voted unanimously to notify the Maine Department of Education that Lisa Ru will continue as superintendent for the 2026-27 school year.
The meeting closed after brief student rep reports and committee updates; the audit for FY 24-25 was described as clean and will be posted on the district website.
