Math staff and the district math coach (Lindsay Dickford) described a package of changes: intervention blocks that split longer classes into 40‑minute targeted small groups for IEP goals, foundations 1–4 courses designed for students well below grade level and a recommendation to move from a dual‑enrollment pre‑calculus offering to an AP pre‑calculus course in response to student demand. Dickford noted the district does not run classes below eight students and that typical section sizes for many options are 10–12 students.
Staff said foundations courses will be taught by special educators in small groups to deliver specially designed instruction, and that the department ran enrollment and workload analyses showing no additional staffing hires are required under the proposed model. The committee also discussed options for year‑long versus semester courses and the role of dual enrollment and AP credit in students’ postsecondary planning.
Staff disclosed a modest licensing fee tied to the AP pre‑calculus transition (approximately $400), which will be embedded in the curriculum budget. A committee member moved to approve the math portion of the Program of Studies; the motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Committee materials will be folded into the full Program of Studies review at the February meeting for finalization and placement in next year’s course catalogs.
