Waldo County Tech Center eyes state 9–16 grant; board stresses district buy-in for any regional high school plan

Page said the center is pursuing a state "9–16 educational facility" grant with a grant writer; the first application deadline is Dec. 1. The grant could fund a major new facility that would co-locate CTE programming with a larger regional high school and partner with postsecondary institutions.
"They were talking about this big grant that there is the potential of doing a big high school and pulling from Belfast and Mount View and Searsport to build this one universal high school somewhere and connecting it with the CTC," one board member said during the report, describing discussion at the CTC meeting. Board members repeatedly cautioned that any move of that scale would require formal agreement from each sending district and could not proceed without signatures and explicit buy-in.
Page said the technical center is also planning smaller improvements: electrical upgrades, safety signage and room numbering to align safety plans across districts, a new IT ticketing system and a planned server-room upgrade to go out to bid. She reported current enrollment at the CTC is about 118 students, with 39 attendees from RSU 20.
The CTC has scheduled an Oct. 16 meeting with invited board members and administrators across the three sending districts to refine program language and ensure quorums for decision-making. Page said architects will meet in October to advise whether to renovate or rebuild and that the committee has begun discussions about stakeholder committees to draft vision and mission statements.
Board members asked whether submitting a preliminary intent-to-apply would bind districts to consolidation; administrators said a state preliminary submission is likely an "intent to apply" and that further steps — including showing district buy-in — would be required before the state moved the process forward.
The board and CTC plan additional committee meetings and outreach; Page said the CTC is hiring a grant writer to assist with the early application material and that no location decisions have been finalized.
The board did not take a formal vote on the CTC items during the meeting; members simply accepted the report and asked for follow-up at future meetings.
