The RSU 20 Board of Directors voted unanimously to remove routine board approval by vote of volunteers, coaches and support staff and instead list those appointments on the agenda as information.
Board members debated the change at length before the vote, raising timing and vetting concerns. Dr. Miller described the practical effect on administration, saying the board’s "responsibility really is teaching staff," and that volunteers, coaches and support staff have historically been handled by administration to speed operations and hiring.
Several board members said they would prefer not to vote on such appointments but asked administrators to provide a consistent screening and monitoring template so the board could, if needed, explain the vetting process to the public. As one board member put it, they want "some form of application review slash... monitoring slash correction" so the public can be assured everyone has gone through the same process.
A motion to remove the items from the consent-to-vote portion of the agenda and instead present them as information passed unanimously. Members noted that, practically, moving to information could mean some volunteers or support staff begin work before the board sees an informational listing, and they asked administration to time notices to give board members a reasonable review window when possible.
Administration also presented two volunteer nominees for information — Christian Cobalt (middle-school soccer) and Benjamin Powell (high-school soccer) — and two support-staff candidates: Max Smith (high-school kitchen) and Jade Stone (special-education edtech). Board members welcomed the hires and asked that candidate summaries and a consistent public-facing handbook or posting be made available on the district website.
The board directed administration to develop and share a consistent screening/monitoring template and return with any recommended policy clarifications at a future meeting.
