The Mendota City Council voted June 3 to direct staff to reschedule a joint meeting with the Mendota Unified School District Board of Trustees and to include a slate of issues for discussion, including city and district project updates, water-capacity expansion, access to and use of MUSD sports fields and facilities, enrollment trends, student involvement in local government and pedestrian-safety improvements on State Highways 180 and 33.
Mayor Victor Martinez introduced the item and City Manager Cristian Gonzalez provided the staff report. Council Member Joseph R. Riofrio moved to direct staff to incorporate the topics discussed and to request that the joint meeting be rescheduled; Mayor Pro Tem Jose Alonso seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
During the discussion the council listed potential agenda topics to present to district trustees: updates on the Community Center and other city projects; ways to expand water capabilities; consideration of student participation in city government projects; and safety measures around school routes including rapid flashing beacons. Josh Garcia urged the council to consider constructing a new school and adding classrooms at Mendota Elementary School. Veronica Gill commented on the need for more housing in the city.
The action sends staff back to coordinate a meeting date and an agenda with MUSD; the council did not set a meeting date during the public minutes and did not adopt binding commitments on any of the items raised. Follow-up on specific project responsibilities and funding will be subject to future staff reports and the district’s participation.
