MSAD 11 Title I staff report strong turnout for district family engagement science night

Title I staff and district literacy and math interventionists told the board about a district Title I family-engagement event held Jan. 14 that combined hands-on science demonstrations with literacy and math activities.
Cheryl Lin (Riverview) and Penny Edmonds (Helen Thompson) described demonstrations—combustion, dry ice sublimation and polymer experiments—that engaged children and families and allowed students to take home materials. The visiting presenter from Mad Science of Maine tied experiments to literacy and numeracy learning. Staff credited Angela Hardy for organizing the event and named a local business that donated pizza.
Rebecca Dukat, a literacy interventionist at Pittston–Randolph Consolidated School, told the board the event reinforced that Title I services are provided across schools and that more than 100 students benefited districtwide; she said her team had tested and exited over 30% of students at her school from Title I services in the past year. Parents who attended spoke positively about seeing their children engaged and learning.
The board recognized the event as a model for family engagement and heard staff request more similar districtwide activities to build connections across buildings. No formal action was required; the presentations were informational.
