The RSU 25 board voted unanimously to adopt updated K–12 physical education and art curriculum documents after administrators and teachers presented the drafts.
Administrator Christina described the PE document as aligned to the State of Maine’s 2021 learning results, organized around five strands (motor skills and movement, concepts and strategies, fitness education, responsible personal and social behavior, and recognition of the value of physical education). She said K–4 performance indicators are grade‑specific, middle grades use level‑based spans and high school students must complete at least one semester of PE to meet graduation requirements; additional electives and pathway options can satisfy level‑two expectations.
Christina and art teachers also presented the Visual Arts document, which extracts and expands the art standards from the state’s Visual and Performing Arts guidance. The art curriculum is organized by grade for K–8 and by course for 9–12 and includes a resource bank and sample units intended to help new teachers implement standards while preserving teacher creativity.
Board members discussed assessment approaches, pathway flexibility (allowing CTE and other courses to satisfy arts/PE graduation standards where appropriate), and implementation timelines. After discussion the board moved, seconded and adopted both documents as presented.
The district indicated curriculum materials will remain on a regular five‑year review cycle, and the curriculum committee will continue to monitor implementation and recommend updates as needed.
