Chebeague Island School Committee: dedicated bookkeeping planned; town seeks audit of last year’s budgets

The Chebeague Island School Committee concluded at its Dec. 7, 2021 meeting that the school needs dedicated bookkeeping and will request that service from the Town Selectboard and budget for it in the next fiscal year.
Superintendent Ann C. Kirkpatrick led a discussion of the district’s fiscal workload, citing responsibilities that include payroll processing and reporting for state and federal taxes, Medicare and the Maine State Retirement System, quarterly unemployment filings, preparing warrants, entering invoices, paying creditors, state and federal reporting, and grant writing and management. Committee members said those duties had previously been split among a part-time town clerk, a bookkeeper and the town manager; when the bookkeeper left the town redistributed those tasks among remaining staff.
"It was determined that the school could use dedicated bookkeeping," the minutes state. Committee members agreed to communicate the need to the Town Selectboard and to include dedicated bookkeeping in the school’s next fiscal-year budget.
Committee members also discussed town-level financial housekeeping: the town is seeking a firm to audit last year’s town and school budgets, officials said, and COVID and LEA grant work from last year has been completed. Members said the district does not yet know what the state reimbursement will be for special education services.
The meeting opened at 6:02 p.m. and adjourned at 7:43 p.m.
