School committee to survey parents, staff and students on indoor mask rules

Kirkpatrick told committee members that Long Island, Isleboro, Vinalhaven and North Haven schools have universal indoor mask mandates regardless of vaccination status. The committee asked that the superintendent compile that information, run a local survey before the first October meeting and develop possible criteria for ending universal indoor masking, acknowledging that variations in COVID strains and fluctuating infection rates make establishing a fixed matrix difficult.
Committee members emphasized the need for community input before changing protocols; no decision to change mask requirements was made at the Sept. 7 meeting. The committee recorded that statewide case reports show students testing positive in several districts since school reopened, underscoring the need for careful local review.
The committee will review the survey results and any recommended criteria at its Oct. 5, 2021 meeting.
