Chebeague Island School Committee hires art teacher; special election set after resignations

Chebeague Island, Maine — The Chebeague Island School Committee on Aug. 3 approved the hiring of Christine Englund as art teacher for the 2021–22 school year and recorded a member resignation that the minutes say will trigger a town special election on Sept. 14.
The hiring motion was made by Jeff Putnam and seconded by Viktoria Wood; the committee approved the appointment by a 4-0-0 vote. The minutes list Englund by name but do not record whether she was present at the meeting.
Chair Leah Guay told the committee she was sorry to see Meredith Beaupre resign. The minutes state the Town of Chebeague will hold a special election on Sept. 14 to fill two seats described in the record as vacated by Leah Guay and Meredith Beaupre; the minutes say new members will be sworn in and ready for the Sept. 21 meeting. (The meeting record contains inconsistent wording about which seats are vacated; the resignation of Meredith Beaupre is explicitly noted.)
Superintendent and Principal Ann Kirkpatrick reported on school finances and operations. She said the school has received its own credit card and discussed how the Town Office will track credit-card invoices. Kirkpatrick also said the school van, which was serviced at Lee Toyota, did not pass inspection; staff plan to order parts for the struts and power steering and to barge the vehicle back for repairs.
On COVID-19 planning, Kirkpatrick said no final decisions had been made on safety protocols for the start of the school year; the Town CART team will reconvene and she will continue attending those meetings to gather information and community concerns.
The committee went into an executive session at 7:15 p.m. after a motion by Chair Leah Guay, seconded by Jeff Putnam, citing 1 M.S.R.A. § 405 (6)(E). The committee reconvened at 7:47 p.m.; the minutes record that no action was taken during the executive session.
Other business noted in the minutes included warrants for committee review and signature and a letter to parents regarding CTC that was tabled to the next meeting. The committee also recorded prior procedural business: approval of the agenda and approval of minutes (the minutes contain inconsistent date wording regarding the July minutes).
