Resilience fellow tells Chebeague Island School Committee to limit boiler use, reallocate town solar credits

Addison Davis, the Chebeague Island Resilience Fellow with the Greater Portland Coalition of Governments, presented a yearlong review of the school’s energy use at the Chebeague Island School Committee’s June 16 meeting. The report evaluated how recently installed heat pumps have affected oil and electricity consumption and identified steps the school and town could take to reduce operating costs.

Davis delivered two central recommendations: limit the boiler’s role to a backup heating source used only in the very coldest stretches of winter, and seek to reallocate the credits generated by the town’s solar array so they better align with electricity consumption across town departments, including the school. Davis suggested the committee send an email to the Selectboard and the Town Administrator requesting the reallocation of solar credits.

Committee members asked a variety of questions about the findings and possible next steps. No formal motion or binding vote was recorded on the recommendations during the meeting. The presentation was framed as an informational workshop so the committee could consider operational changes and request town-level action where authority rests with the Selectboard.

The report also noted practical steps for summer work and follow-up communications that the school planned to include in its summer newsletter. The committee did not finalize a course of action on reallocating solar credits or changing boiler operation during this meeting; any change that requires town-level approval would proceed through the Selectboard.
