Acton explores box culvert replacement on Sanborn Road to protect fish passage and improve safety

The Select Board discussed a proposed culvert-replacement project on Sanborn Road at its March 18 meeting after Road Commissioner Will Langley described site conditions and environmental constraints.
Langley said the existing structure is a fish passage used by spawning brook trout and that the road at the location is narrow with limited cover. He described options including a like-for-like replacement or installing a box culvert that would allow the headwall to be set lower and permit placing the guardrail at a legal height above it. Langley said he has spoken with Inland Fisheries and the town's engineering partner, Sebago Technics, and proposes developing conceptual designs and cost estimates to pursue matching grants when funding cycles open in 2027.
"If we go through all of that it will also need to go out to bid," Langley said, noting the town would need engineering, permitting and a clear paper trail for grant applications. Board members agreed that pursuing grant funding to cover a share of the work was prudent and asked Langley to return with cost estimates.
