Organizers of a proposed Park Rapids Area Community Center told the council on July 22 they are seeking the city’s assistance as a fiscal host through December while they finish paperwork to become a 501(c)(3) and begin fundraising.
Donna Anderson, who said she works at the extension office and has served in local health and wellness roles, described community surveys and a planning board the organizers assembled. Anderson said organizers are working with engineer‑planner Widseth on pre‑design and have discussed options including a pool, gymnasium, therapy pool or hot tub, teen center, childcare and indoor/outdoor play areas. Candy Christensen said she and other volunteers are forming a board; she handed out survey results and said the swimming pool is the top requested amenity.
The organizers said their request to the council was limited to serving as a fiscal host until the nonprofit is formally established; they said they were not asking the city for operating money at this time. The council did not vote on a fiscal‑host agreement during the meeting; organizers asked the council to consider the request and to allow fundraising to begin with city fiscal oversight until the group secures its nonprofit status.
Next steps: organizers intend to continue fundraising and pre‑design work and to return to council if they request formal fiscal‑host approval or other support.
