The Design Review Advisory Committee reviewed a proposal for three 'Welcome to Bantam' gateway signs for Routes 209 and 202 and requested wording and decorative changes. Dick Sheldon presented the 55-by-47-inch sign drawings and confirmed the posts are 4-by-4s wrapped in 1-inch PVC. The committee advised removing the decorative drop disk and the wording 'Maintain a Safe Speed,' saying only the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) may control speeds on state roads. The committee suggested replacing the bottom-line text with the Arts District logo and wording.
Committee members noted that posts larger than 4-by-4 would require break-away drilling under DOT rules, so the applicant confirmed the 4-by-4 posts to avoid that requirement. Sheldon said he would consult Right-Way Signs about whether the bottom-line wording can be modified. The application was scheduled for the DRAC agenda on June 4 for further review.
The committee did not take a final vote at this meeting; the item will return to the June 4 agenda with the applicant's revised wording and sign proof.
