Maynard said the department aided the Ashville Police Department with parade coordination for the July 4 festival and has submitted a Department of Justice JAG grant application to replace mobile data terminals (MDTs). He told council members that the current MDTs can be updated to Windows 11 but will become obsolete by the end of the year, and estimated replacement costs at about $27,000, with the grant expected to cover roughly $19,000 of that sum. Maynard described the figures as estimates.
During the update, resident Daniel Huggett asked the chief to explain a social-media trend the department had posted about, described in the minutes as 'door-kicking.' Chief Maynard provided a brief explanation and emphasized safety concerns for teenagers who participate in that activity.
The council took no formal action on the grant request at the meeting; the chief's update was presented as an informational item. Any formal application awards or purchase approvals would appear on a future agenda.
