Instructional committee forwards revisions to Wallingford high‑school math courses

Mrs. Christy Madansy, the district’s K–12 mathematics coordinator, told the committee the Algebra II revisions came from the district’s five‑year review and were designed to align with prior Algebra I changes, cross‑reference SAT topics and connect cleanly to the district’s pre‑calculus dual‑enrollment and CCP1 offerings. "We made sure whatever's tested on the SAT is still present in our course and we tried to frontload those before March," Madansy said, adding that the team developed common assessments across units.
Madansy said the team also consulted a modern algebra framework developed by a Texas mathematics center (the district materials reference the Dana Center) to update units and to align lessons with the district’s MBTC instructional framework and the Portrait of a Graduate initiative.
The committee discussed the Senior Mathematics Seminar, a rebranded replacement for the former Topics in Mathematics course that aims to support students’ post‑secondary goals through an exploratory first unit and student‑designed study units. Committee member Dr. Reid praised the student‑centered design as an opportunity for collaboration and individualized planning.
For Math for Technology and Design, Madansy described expanded rigor for the concurrent‑enrollment course, added project‑based assessments, and confirmation that the course counts toward STEM and mathematics graduation requirements. She said the course continues to be taught by math teachers, though there are opportunities to broaden the offering alongside CTE staff.
The committee took consensus votes to forward each proposed revision (Algebra II, Senior Mathematics Seminar, Math for Technology and Design) to the full board consent agenda; no formal roll‑call tallies were recorded in the transcript.
The items will appear on the full Wallingford Public Schools board agenda for final approval.
