NEWPORT, Ark. — After an overview from NEDC Executive Director Chadwell, the Newport City Council on Aug. 5 approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to enter into an administrative agreement with White River Planning and Development District, Inc. to pursue an Economic Development Administration grant to fund renovations to the NEDC building.
Mayor Ratliffe read the resolution in full and recognized Chadwell, who provided a summary of the planned renovations. Council member Michael Allen moved to approve the resolution and Donnie Ivie seconded; the motion carried 7–0 with Allen, Moss, Ivie, May, Green, Lake and Mansko voting yes.
The meeting minutes record Chadwell’s overview as "very informative" but do not include a dollar amount, timeline or detailed scope of work for the renovation. The council’s action authorizes the mayor to execute an administrative agreement with White River Planning and Development District, Inc., which the council identified as a partner for pursuing EDA funding. The record does not indicate whether matching funds or local budget commitments are required.
Next steps recorded in the meeting: the mayor’s office and NEDC would proceed to finalize the administrative agreement with White River Planning to prepare and pursue the EDA application. The minutes do not state an application deadline or expected grant amount.
The council took the vote during its regular session and proceeded to other agenda items after approval.
