John Dean, who presented the draft, said the policy applies to classified staff who drive vans and subjects them to the same drug‑testing provisions used for bus drivers, following the van driver classification adopted by the district on June 18, 2024 and subsequent agreements with the Columbus School Employees Association (CSEA). ‘‘This policy draft applies specifically to classified staff who drive vans and subjects them to the same drug testing provisions as bus drivers,’’ Mr. Dean said.
Mr. Dean told the committee the draft was vetted with CSEA leadership and discussed with local 581, and that the testing procedures called out in the draft mirror federal DOT regulations for types of tests and processes. Committee members noted staff would continue conversations with occupational partners before the draft reaches the board.
A motion to recommend the draft policy to the board — after further deliberation with labor partners — was moved and seconded; the committee approved it on a roll‑call vote.
Next steps: administration will continue labor consultations and submit the revised draft to the full board for consideration.
