Brooklyn holds public hearing on $50,000 community development supplemental grant

Mr. Henry, the city engineer, opened a public hearing before the Brooklyn City Council on a $50,000 community development supplemental grant funded from county casino distributions, saying the money can be used "for anything we would like to use that would benefit the community itself." He told the council the city has received the supplemental award over the past two to three years and used the funds for home beautification and exterior grants.
Councilmember Kathy Poochie urged the council to consider a broader eligibility definition, noting that in a prior year interior work such as adding a bathroom was allowed and that expanding eligibility again could help additional residents. Another member said the city plans to match the $50,000 grant with $50,000 of city funds and that the match will improve the application scoring.
Mr. Henry said the city must advertise the public hearing and collect sign-in sheets for the application; he identified a filing window in mid-November and offered to answer questions. Council members also noted the standard process: after hearing public comment the city will place an ordinance on the next council meeting’s agenda to authorize applying for the grant.
The public hearing closed after brief comments and the council voted to adjourn the hearing. The council recorded the motion and unanimous affirmative votes to end the public hearing and proceed with the application process.
