North Haven fire department awarded volunteer firefighter grant; board to consider matching funds

Representatives of the North Haven Fire Department reported they were awarded a volunteer firefighter capacity grant this week to replace select officer turnout gear with lighter technical-rescue gear, purchase personal thermal imagers and support recruitment and training.
"We were awarded that this week," a fire department representative said, describing the award and how it funds five new sets of turnout/tech-rescue kits and personal thermal imagers that attach to SCBA packs. The grant includes a 50/50 match requirement the board must approve; the department said the town would need to vote to accept the match and make purchases before the grant deadline (July 31 as noted in the presentation).
Fire officials said the new gear will increase capability for wildland and technical-rescue incidents, that seven new members have joined and will pursue basic firefighting training in the spring, and that they are pursuing more training with neighboring departments. The department also described plans to install additional dry hydrants at ponds to reduce response time for drafting water into fire engines, and noted the town already owns materials for several dry-hydrant installations.
Members discussed posting community reminders (chimney safety, driveway access) and creating a program for reflective address number placards to aid responders. The board agreed to set up follow-up meetings and to schedule the match-approval vote on a future agenda.
