North Haven’s Select Board spent substantial time March 4 reviewing a proposed governance structure for the town-run medical clinic and setting next steps for recruitment and job‑description updates.
Staff and the strategic-planning team presented a model that would add clearer oversight of clinical care (a medical director, either in-house or contracted) and expand the clinic administrator’s duties beyond revenue-cycle management to include day-to-day operational oversight. The board debated whether a medical director should be an in-house hire or an outside contract (some members favored external, independent clinical oversight to avoid supervisory conflicts), and whether the current clinic-administrator job description matches the tasks staff are already performing.
The board asked for more information on costs and any legal requirements for physician oversight of nurse practitioners and requested written feedback from members for the strategic-planning team’s March 17 meeting. The board also agreed to assemble a hiring committee for an expected provider vacancy in December; one select board member volunteered to serve, and the committee was planned to include clinic staff and a community representative.
