Select Board steps in to staff transfer station while town searches for replacement

Staff proposed shifting the station schedule to Mondays and Wednesdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and to stop taking cash or checks on site; residents would buy stickers at the town office or use prepaid accounts. Board members and staff discussed the need to keep the current attendant employed and concerns that reducing open days could jeopardize that person’s hours. Several select board members volunteered to cover full-day Mondays in March; a town employee will cover Wednesdays for now. The town will post the temporary coverage plan publicly and said that, if no hire is found by April, it may reduce service to one day a week.
Staff said they have reached out to private contractors and larger haulers as possible longer-term options and are evaluating cost and operational impacts. The board asked staff to continue active recruitment, update the public about schedule changes and track how the interim coverage affects service levels and employee retention.
