Commissioners give first approval to Cook City resort tax ordinance; second reading scheduled

County legal counsel explained statutory requirements for adopting resort-tax ordinances and recommended waiving the reading and granting first approval at the Aug. 5 meeting so the ordinance can return for final passage after the statutory waiting period.
"The statute is very specific on how to go about passing ordinances," the county attorney said, and recommended a motion to waive the reading and proceed with first approval. A commissioner moved to waive the reading and to approve the ordinance for first approval; the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor.
The proposal updates the county's resort-tax ordinance to cover both the 1% and 3% resort taxes. Counsel noted that after first approval the ordinance must be brought back after 12 days for second and final passage; the commission scheduled the item to return to a future agenda for that purpose.
No public opposition was recorded at the meeting; staff said the ordinance text had been attached to the agenda and was read into the record at a prior meeting for accessibility.
