Marquette County highway staff report February costs, fuel sales and rising labor levels

Marquette County highway staff reported detailed February financial and operational figures, noting rising labor usage and fuel sales.

Brian Trebiatowski told the committee that RMA costs for February were $221,581, mostly driven by winter maintenance, and that the remaining state budget for 2025 was reported as $551,952 (minutes record 39.72% of the 2025 state budget used). County costs for February 2025 were recorded as $887,176.92, including $52,150 in County Maintenance (patching, signing, brushing); winter maintenance costs of $163,746; special county maintenance of $667,759.94; road construction $3,259.16; and overlay maintenance $262. The minutes list the remaining 2025 county budget at $2,209,904.08.

Township work in February totaled $193,968 (labor $68,385); villages and city work totaled $2,505 (labor $293). The record shows current-year labor is up 28.83% versus a five-year average and 86.52% versus last year; seasonal construction is up 73.52% while winter maintenance is down 29.23% compared to the five-year average.

Interdepartmental fuel sales in February were 4,168 gallons with per-gallon averages of $2.8595 unleaded and $2.9076 diesel, including the state tax of $0.309 per gallon. Year-to-date gallons sold were reported as 8,311 with year averages of $2.8344 unleaded and $2.8957 diesel.

The minutes note labor distribution by job type through February: County 48.16%, State 24.16%, Townships 27.38% and Interdepartmental 0.30%, and state that only 21.04% of the department’s labor is charged to the County budget.

The committee did not take formal action on these reports; they were received as informational.
