Marquette County logs 398 crashes in 2024; committee reviews statewide trends and new impairment screening

Marquette County’s Traffic Safety Committee reviewed preliminary traffic totals for 2024 at its Jan. 8 meeting, reporting 398 crashes with 126 injuries and no fatalities. The minutes state 22 crashes included 36 serious injuries; overall crashes rose about 5% compared with 2023.
Committee member Trace Frost briefed members on statewide figures, citing a preliminary total of 564 traffic fatalities for Wisconsin in 2024 — unchanged from 2023 so far — and noting 22 horse/buggy crashes statewide with one fatality. Frost said Marquette County has recorded seven horse/buggy crashes since 2018 and that the county will add a flag for these crashes in Community Maps to help identify patterns.
Frost also referenced Department of Natural Resources reporting that there were 39 ATV/UTV fatalities in 2024. To address nonalcohol impairment concerns, Frost described a new roadside screening tool called Driver Orientated Screening for Cognitive Impairment (DOSCI), which uses nine questions and a point system to help justify completing a Driver Condition Report when cognitive impairment (not caused by alcohol or drugs) is suspected.
The committee noted the 2024 crash summary as part of ongoing safety monitoring; no formal policy changes were proposed during the meeting.
