Council approves multiple zoning items, defers several petitions to Aug. 17

Charlotte council members handled a large slate of rezoning petitions and site-plan amendments during a lengthy hearing. Early in the meeting staff read the rezoning procedures and explained public hearing rules; several petitioners and staff made presentations and the council advanced multiple items.
Council approved a consent agenda that included multiple petitions meeting staff and zoning-committee criteria and adopted zoning-committee statements of consistency for those items. Several petitioners asked to defer decisions or public hearings to the Aug. 17 zoning meeting (items 11, 12, 15 and 17); council approved those deferrals by voice/hand vote.
Staff recommended approval, upon resolution of outstanding technical issues, of several conditional rezoning and site-plan amendment petitions across the agenda (including petitions to permit a hotel near Little Rock Road, updates to industrial sites with buffers and prohibited uses, and a site-plan amendment to allow neighborhood-serving businesses). In each instance staff noted outstanding transportation, environmental or technical items that will be addressed before final action.
Council closed multiple public hearings after testimony and asked petitioners and staff to return with revised conditional notes or technical fixes where needed. Several items were approved by roll call/hand vote for adoption of zoning committee statements of consistency; other contested petitions were left to return as conditional filings or to come back after additional neighborhood outreach.
