The board introduced Sulaiman Akbar on May 11 as the district's selected candidate for principal of Shaw High School. Akbar told the board he has 24 years in education and is currently working as a principal at the American International School in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He said he began his career in New York City and Atlanta public schools before moving to international posts.
Superintendent Dr. Pedigrew described a multi-stage selection process: initial interviews with three central-office leaders followed by interviews and surveys involving students, staff and parents. The superintendent said the final selection of Akbar was unanimous among the interview groups.
Akbar said he believes in "a strong instructional core" and multi-tiered systems of support, and expressed excitement about joining East Cleveland. The board also introduced Chris Harvan (transcript: Harvan), the district's new digital design coordinator, who said he is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art and has 26 years of design experience.
Board members thanked the hiring team, noted the intensity of the finalist interviews (including parent surveys), and welcomed both hires. The appointment of personnel listed in the superintendent's recommendations, including summer staffing and certified positions, was moved and approved earlier in the meeting.
