The East Cleveland City School District board paused its agenda on May 11 to recognize fourth-grader Amir Henderson of Mayfair for winning a regional grand-prize in the Streeter Hardy Matthews art competition.
Principal Evan Pyle introduced Amir and described the student as "independent, creative, mature, hard-working," noting the project was selected from roughly 8,000 submissions and was one of five grand champions for the region. Pyle said Amir received a $100 prize and his teacher, Mrs. Carpenter, received $250 to continue art programming at Mayfair.
Amir told the board he had not expected the recognition and described his approach as "random ideas" that he drew into the finished piece. Mrs. Carpenter, the Mayfair art teacher, thanked Amir and his family and acknowledged other staff members who supported the project.
Board members and audience members applauded; the board invited the family to remain for a photo with members and thanked teachers and families for supporting student arts. The presentation was followed by the board's regular agenda business.
